Students at Gilbert High School have formed a poetry club in anticipation of a visit by professional poet, Brod Bagert.
Mr. Bagert is collaborating with Janet Boltjes, the library media specialist at GHS.
January 13, 2005 - During our first club meeting, we listened to several poems recorded by Mr. Bagert. During the discussion
of the poems, we also talked about the presentation of the poems, the meaning of the poems, and why we liked them or didn't
like them.
January 20, 2005 - Students have been asked to recite a poem they have written. We will listen to short essays by Mr.
Bagert.
-At our meeting, we enjoyed listening to poems written by some of our club members! What a talented group we have! We
listened to Mr. Bagert's recorded essays and discussed them. While we were discussing all of the information, we had a special
treat. Mr. Bagert called us on Ms. Boltjes cell phone to see if we had any questions. He then emailed several of the poems
he had just written to us. He wants us to comment on them, and let him know what we think of the poems.
-We want to compile a group of poems that we have written and have students from our school illustrate the poems.
January 27 - Students will be asked to select a poem to recite for this club meeting. They can select one from a list
selected by English teachers at Gilbert High School, or they can choose a poem from any other author they like. We will hear
more of Mr. Bagert's comments about the poetry process.
